About the University
Voronezh State Medical University (VSMU) is one of the oldest and most prestigious medical universities in Russia. Its history traces back to 1801, when the University of Yuryev (Derpt) was founded in the Russian Empire. In 1918, due to the First World War, the University relocated to Voronezh — bringing its Faculty of Medicine. In December 1930, the medical faculty became an independent institute, and in 1994 it was elevated to university status by the Ministry of Education.
The university is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (9th Edition) published by the World Health Organization. Since its establishment, VSMU has prepared over 40,000 doctors, including more than 1,200 foreign medical specialists from across Europe, Asia, and Africa. In 1992, the International Faculty of Medical Education was introduced for international students, offering a full English-medium MBBS program backed by 345 faculty members including 46 Doctors of Medical Science and 190 PhD holders.
