Overview — Avicenna Tajik State Medical University

Avicenna Tajik State Medical University (ATSMU), established in 1939, is the oldest and most prestigious public medical university in Tajikistan. Located in the capital city of Dushanbe, the university is named after the legendary Persian-Tajik polymath Abuali Ibni Sino (Avicenna) — one of the most celebrated physicians in history. Managed directly by the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Tajikistan, ATSMU is the only higher medical education facility in Tajikistan that prepares medical personnel for the country.

The university is considered the key scientific-methodical base of the Ministry of Health, and the majority of achievements in the sphere of public health in Tajikistan are directly connected with the activity of its professors. Each year, ATSMU's staff carries out over 15,000 surgical operations and over 45,000 remedial and consultative actions — representing approximately 60% of all medical interventions carried out in the healthcare facilities of Dushanbe.

ATSMU offers a 6-year MBBS program — one year shorter than most other MBBS abroad destinations — taught entirely in English for international students. With 90% of the faculty being Indian and over 700 Indian students currently enrolled, ATSMU has one of the most India-friendly campus environments of any medical university in the world. Dushanbe is just 2.5 hours from Delhi by air, making it the closest MBBS abroad destination for most Indian students.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Avicenna Tajik State Medical University approved by India's NMC?

Yes. Avicenna Tajik State Medical University (ATSMU) is approved by India's National Medical Commission (NMC). It is also recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the World Health Organization (WHO), FAIMER, USMLE, and DORA. Graduates of ATSMU are fully eligible to appear in the FMGE (Foreign Medical Graduate Examination) or NExT examination in India, and upon clearing it, can obtain Indian medical registration and practise medicine anywhere in India. MED EDUTECH GLOBAL recommends only NMC-approved institutions in Tajikistan.

Is Avicenna Tajik State Medical University a good university?

Yes — ATSMU is the premier medical institution in Tajikistan, established in 1939 and managed by the Ministry of Health. It is the only higher medical education facility in the country dedicated to producing medical personnel. What makes it exceptional for Indian students specifically is: 90% Indian faculty (meaning completely familiar teaching styles), 700+ Indian students on campus, Indian mess with veg and non-veg food, a strict no-ragging policy, 6-year MBBS completion, and one of the most comprehensive clinical training networks with 43 affiliated hospitals. It is nationally ranked #2 in Tajikistan and holds global recognition from NMC, WHO, FAIMER, UNESCO, and USMLE.

Is the MBBS at ATSMU really only 6 years?

Yes. ATSMU offers a 6-year MBBS program — one full year shorter than the standard 6-year program offered at most MBBS abroad destinations (including Russia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and others). This makes ATSMU one of the fastest routes to completing an internationally recognised, NMC-approved MBBS degree. It saves one full year of living expenses, hostel fees, and opportunity cost — making it significantly more economical than the already affordable fee structure suggests at face value.

How close is Dushanbe to India? Is travel easy?

Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan and home to ATSMU, is approximately 2.5 hours from Delhi by air — making it the closest MBBS abroad destination to India. Several airlines operate direct and connecting flights between major Indian cities (Delhi, Mumbai) and Dushanbe International Airport. This proximity means students can visit home more frequently and at lower flight cost compared to destinations like Russia, Belarus, or China. Parents can also visit more easily — which provides significant peace of mind for families.

What is the FMGE coaching situation for ATSMU students?

Because 90% of ATSMU's faculty are Indian professors and doctors, the entire teaching approach — terminology, exam preparation, clinical reasoning style — is naturally aligned with what Indian students need for FMGE/NExT success. The curriculum is taught in English and covers all subjects as per NMC requirements. MED EDUTECH GLOBAL also provides FMGE/NExT guidance and resources as part of our post-admission support for all our students in Tajikistan.
